TJ and Jesse Mizell Launch Cannabis Line JAM MASTER JAYS

“It’s Christmas time in Hollis Queens
Mom’s cooking chicken and collard greens”

    Run-D.M.C.

One of many memorable songs, “Christmas in Hollis” was my introduction to Run DMC. Defined as the most influential hip hop groups in music, Run DMC helped shape the culture and became one of the top acts in the 1980’s. Responsible for breaking hip hop into mainstream music, their influence reached more than music, but also in fashion.

    Jam Master Jay

In music, the DJ is the foundation of hip hop. Defining the sound of Run D.M.C, Jason William Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay was the DJ of the influential hip hop group. With his unique flair in fashion, Mizell pioneered the classic all-black hats and Adidas shell toes that became a synonym for the group.

Born in Brooklyn, New York the multi-talented artist played bass, drums, and guitar before getting on the turntables. Mizell was known for his skills in re-working riffs. On Spin’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, he ranked 10th.

Then at the young age of 13, he began to start DJing and quickly caught on to the skill set. From playing at parks to bars, Mizell grew confident and then started hosting parties around the community. His focus was just being a part of a band and in 1982 linked with Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels.

Touring the world and changing the face of music, Mizell’s impact was felt through the genre. His untimely death saddened the community and our culture, but his legacy would not be forgotten and would live on through his sons.

    Passing of the Torch

As an intern at Adidas Entertainment and Marketing, I had the opportunity to assist with office visits. By helping pick out merchandise and shoes for artists, I was introduced to TJ Mizell, the oldest son of Jam Master Jay.

    JAM MASTER JAY

Following his legendary father’s footsteps, TJ began DJing at a young age and was primarily self-taught. With that drive, he honed in on the skill set and refined his craft at the New York City DJ Scratch Academy. The DJ school was founded by his father, Jam Master Jay.

In 2014, after remixing a couple of A$AP Mob pieces, he caught the attention of A$AP Ferg, which lead to his opportunity to become the DJ for his team. TJ has toured Europe and Australia. Collaborating with artist from MI.A to DJ Scratch and Run DMC. Garnishing his own sound of Trap and EDM, TJ formed the group Alexander Smash with producer and friend Seb Marmolejo in 2020. Gaining ground with over 260 streams, 2021 plans to be a big year for the new group.

While building my relationship with TJ, I made an effort to go out my way to support any events he hosted in LA. On a mellow sunny day in April of 2017, after work, I attended Dopeland. An event that brought creatives together with skateboarding and music. There I met TJs, his brother Jesse Mizell.

There’s no mistake, Jesse is the spitting image of his father, Jam Master Jay; from the fashion down to the hairstyles. You’re likely not to see Jesse much in front of the cameras, he does his damage behind the scenes.

    DopeRoots

Graduating from Berkeley College with his Bachelor’s in Marketing, the young, energetic, creative, is on his grind focused on pushing the family’s brand and keeping his dad’s name alive in the Gen Z culture.

Co-founding the group DopeRoots with his brother TJ, he’s created new merch, assisted on a future shoe collaboration with Adidas and has grown the brand outside of New York and brought it to LA.

Attending an event in 2018, That’s Dope LA, the brothers handed me a couple of pre-rolls in a bottle. Then I knew, at that time TJ and Jesse’s idea was ahead of time.

    New Cannabis Brand

JAM MASTER JAYS, a 4 premium pack of Cannabis joints with 2 grams total. From my experience trying the product, there’s an enjoyable high. A Smooth inhale with no harsh hits. Unlike most pre-rolls that hit hard and burn unevenly.

    JAM MASTER JAY
    JAM MASTER JAYS CANNABIS

What’s sets JMJ’s apart from the competition is the creative packaging. Sold in a modified cassette tape holder, which gives you that mid-80’s b-boy vibe. Growing up a fan of music, I had a cassette player and was a collector. The cassette holder is reusable and definitely is a collector’s item.

Jam Master Jays are sold exclusively. A fully licensed dispensary in Los Angeles called Maywood Cookies, and its next drop is a collaboration with Native Roots Cannabis Co in Colorado.

TJ and Jesse are clearly ahead of the competition. With the legalization coming to New Jersey and next New York, I see their brand taking off in 2021.

  • Kanye West Smokes on the Eve of His First Presidential Campaign

Kanye West Smokes on the Eve of His First Presidential Campaign

Kanye West, the famous American rapper, hit the blunt one day before his first presidential campaign to express support for the legalization. He is eager and motivated to free those Black Americans who are imprisoned or punished on cannabis offenses.

In his Southern Carolina political rally, he expressed concern and the need for marijuana availability, while mentioning other sensitive subjects such as the criticism of Harriet Tubman.

Even though initial reports indicated that West voiced support for cannabis legalization, there seems to be some sort of miscommunication about his actual comments because the rapper did not use a mic during the speech.

Concerns were raised on West’s seriousness to run for the presidency because the deadline to turn in signatures for November’s ballot access in Southern Carolina passed without him submitting any petitions.

  • Pro Sports Leagues Struggle With Marijuana Legalization

Pro Sports Leagues Struggle With Marijuana Legalization

The landscape around pro sports leagues and marijuana are changing in the United States. There are now 10 states that have legalized recreational use of marijuana even with marijuana still being illegal on a federal level. This is a strange dynamic, to say the least. Nothing better states this dynamic like the rules on marijuana use and professional sports.

    Professional Sports Leagues Marijuana Policies

    NFL:

The NFL’s Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse, “marijuana and synthetic cannabinoids” are on the list of illegal substances even “passive inhalation” being deemed an inexcusable defense. The NFL did raise their threshold for drug test failures in 2014 but the Leagues threshold is still 75 percent below the Olympic standard.

Typically the NFL only performs one drug test per season and is done during the pre-season training process. Random drug tests can be performed though if the team request it or if a player is in the NFL’s drug program. Even with states beginning to rapidly legalize cannabis the NFL’s commissioner Roger Goodell is not convinced that marijuana use is good for players.

Stating to ESPN in 2017 “Is it something that can be negative to the health of our players? Listen, you are ingesting smoke, that’s not usually a very positive thing, people would say. It does have an addictive nature. There are a lot of compounds in marijuana that may not be healthy for our players long-term. All those have to be considered,”

Of course, this same feeling isn’t shared by all the NFL’s players. There have been countless interviews where players have said that cannabis use can help them ease the pain from years of strain on their muscles. Mike James even went as far as to apply for a medical exemption with the league so he could use cannabis for medical purposes. His request was unfortunately denied.

    MLB:

The MLB is no stranger to being in the spotlight for having players that have drug problems especially those that enhance performance. Even with this, the MLB is far more relaxed on their drug screening then the NFL. The MLB defines drugs of abuse both synthetic and natural cannabis, opiates, and ecstasy.

These drugs of abuse are tested and suspended for during the minors, the majors do not test players as part of the regular season unless there is deemed a reasonable cause for testing. Even then if a player fails a test they are fined instead of suspended. You can read up more on the MLB drug policy here.

    NHL:

Now with cannabis being legalized in Canada, you may be asking if the NHL will be the first league to change professional sports and the stances on marijuana. When Commissioner Gary Bettman gave an emphatic no, declaring “The Substance Abuse & Behavioral Health Program for decades has been educating players on using drugs, legal or illegal. … We think based on the educational level and what we do test for and how we test, at least for the time being, we’re comfortable with where we are.”

Marijuana is not necessarily a banned substance in the eyes of the league. Players are randomly drug tested two times during the season, one-third of the players are then selected from that group for advanced testing. One of the drugs tested for cannabinoids. Positive tests are not publicized or penalized but referred to the NHL and NHLPA’s performance-enhancing substance council for review. If deemed necessary players may have to be apart of the league’s substance abuse program. No suspension is attached to this program.

While the use of marijuana is still mainly frowned upon by the NHL a former player and front office executive estimated that 60-70% of players use marijuana for recreational use or pain management.

    NBA:

The NBA tends to be the most progressive league in pro sports. Their current stance is surprising with the league having even a lower threshold then the NFL. No exemptions are giving for medical use there is no penalty though till the third infraction. Their penalty is a five-game suspension and then 5 sequential games for every violation after that.

The NBA also has 4 random drug tests for every player during the regular season as well as 2 during the off-season. More tests can be requested if deemed necessary by the team.

Now commissioner Adam Silver is currently reviewing the league’s stance on illegal substances. He even stated in an interview with Howard Beck ” We should follow science, This is not a moral issue for me, It is not an ethical issue for me. I obviously see what’s happening in states around me.” So it might not be too long till we see the NBA at least relaxing their strict rules on marijuana.

  • Cannabition A Museum For Stoners

    Cannabition A Museum For Stoners

Museums can be a fun activity when you are high. I personally feel nothing can make you feel the emotions of the artist more than toking up a little before viewing their exhibit. I have spent countless afternoons wandering around an art museum will high taking in every piece. One of the things I struggle with is wanting to actually experience the art with all my senses. There is finally a stoner-friendly museum just for this.

    Immersive Cannabis Art Museum

A museum called Cannabition has opened in Las Vegas, that’s right a place known for heavy drinking and all around debauchery has just gotten a little more stoner friendly. This is the world first fully immersive cannabis museum. Cannabition takes you through the last 20 years of pot culture in a fully experiential fashion.

The museum has everything that would make a weed museum as fun as possible. It has a Pax sponsored tree swing, a Raw rolling papers kaleidoscope, even a 24-foot bong named bongzilla. They even have a 420 lounge room for when you need a break from all the lights and sounds of Las Vegas.  Now, this museum is not just for fun though you will also learn about the weed harvesting process and what marijuana is best for different occasions. All these things make this museum a must see for any marijuana enthusiast visiting Las Vegas.

    No Tokin Up Inside, Yet!

Obviously, I know you are wondering if you can spark up in this museum. Cannabitions website does state that Las Vegas has rules against smoking in public venues making them not able to let visitors smoke in the museum. There is a workaround for this though because obviously, no stoner wants to go to a weed museum and not be high. Weed is legal in Nevada so you can easily find a place to spark up and get plenty baked before going to the museum. Their website does state that it only takes about an hour to go through the whole museum so your high should easily last you the whole time.
