17 years ago, Canada legalized the use of cannabis only for medicinal purposes. People who were caught using cannabis without a medical prescription were subject to criminal charges and jail time.

However, about 4 months ago, the Senate passed the legalization of the use of cannabis even without a medical prescription. Yesterday, the people of Canada rejoiced during the opening of the first marijuana dispensaries.

Hundreds of people can now legally buy recreational cannabis in the entire country. However, they still need to adjust to Canada laws, specifically with the use of cannabis.

Who Can Buy Cannabis?

According to the Cannabis Act, adults are allowed to grow, buy, possess, and use recreational marijuana, of course, under the Marijuana Laws.

The legalization of the recreational use of marijuana passed the Senate in June. The law states that 18 is the legal age for Alberta and Quebec, while 19 is the legal age for the rest of the country.

Why Is Cannabis Legalized?

Legalizing the use of marijuana is expected to help improve Canada’s economy. People would still ask why, when there are other alternatives other than cannabis. They have a point, but why did they legalize it? Politics in Canada is changing.

The Canadian legislation, which is also known as the “Cannabis Act” started from the campaign pledge of Justin Trudeau, the prime minister. He wanted to keep cannabis away from underage users and to curb crimes related to marijuana.

Although some medical professionals are open about their fear of the consequences brought by the legalization of marijuana, strict rules will still be governing the country in terms of purchases and usage of cannabis.

This is to assure the country that marijuana usage should cause no harm. The government also made some changes with driving laws for people who are driving under the influence of cannabis.

Where to Buy?

The supply of cannabis in stores may be limited because the business has just started. According to CNN, they wouldn’t have a very large selection yet, especially not on its first day. But where can the people buy it? Marijuana will not be available in every store, and that’s a fact.

It won’t be sold in places where alcohol or other cigarettes are sold. People are expected to buy cannabis only from stores or retailers that are regulated by territories and provinces or directly from federally-licensed producers (if other options aren’t available)

What About the Previous Criminal Charges?

There has been no information yet about what will happen to the people who were convicted because of cannabis. However, CNN reported that the authorities will announce the plans to pardon those who have been caught possessing at least 30 grams of cannabis.

What remains to still be a criminal offense is the production and distribution (or sale) of any cannabis products to minors.

Is it Okay to Travel With Cannabis?

Traveling in and out of Canada while possessing weed is prohibited. People aren’t allowed to travel outside Canada, not even in eight of the US states where marijuana is legal.

Bringing cannabis while traveling outside or inside Canada is considered a criminal offense and may result in jail time.  What are your thoughts on the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada?
