The Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, spoke at the 2020/2021 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives. While addressing the audience on the subject of the Jamaican cannabis industry, he disclosed that the CLA has received 705 license applications.
CLA or the Cannabis Licensing Authority is responsible for providing regulatory oversight for cannabis cultivation, import/export etc. in the country. According to Minister Shaw, as of June 16th, 2020, 63 licenses have been issued while 23 are granted and more than 270 applicants have been approved conditionally.
The CLA has also granted 15 export authorizations to Canada, the Cayman Islands and Australia among other countries.
Mr. Shaw closed his speech with a positive message for the future growth of the medical cannabis industry in Jamaica.
