  • Brightseed Introduces Bio 01™, the First Dietary Fiber with Bioactives to Support Gut Strength

    • Brightseed Bio 01™ is the first ingredient in Brightseed’s portfolio of bioactives discovered by its artificial intelligence (A.I.) platform Forager®
    • Formulated to optimize bioactives that support gut health, Brightseed Bio 01™ is a new dietary fiber ingredient for the food and beverage industry
    • Brightseed Bio 01™ will debut at SupplySide West 2022 and be featured in a newly developed protein crisp from plant-based food pioneer, Puris

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Brightseed, the bioactive discovery company, announced today the launch of Brightseed Bio 01™, a novel dietary hemp fiber to support gut health formulated for use in food and beverages. Sourced from upcycled hemp hulls and formulated to optimize bioactive content, Brightseed Bio 01™ is the only dietary fiber on the market that contains two bioactive compounds that have shown the ability to support gut barrier integrity in preclinical studies.

Brightseed Bio 01™ will debut at SupplySide West (SSW), held October 31 – November 4, 2022 in Las Vegas (booth #2075). Brightseed’s new ingredient will be showcased in a number of on-trend prototypes, including a first-to-market protein crisp ingredient, BioCrisp+, jointly developed by Brightseed and Puris, a leading supplier of plant-based proteins, starches and grains.

“We’re thrilled to launch Brightseed Bio 01™, the first of many bioactive ingredients in Brightseed’s pipeline that will enable companies to innovate for health and bring science-backed solutions forward for consumers,” said Sofia Elizondo, co-founder and COO, Brightseed. “More than ever, people are turning to the food and beverage industry for proactive and personalized health solutions. Brightseed Bio 01™ is the latest demonstration of how Forager® A.I. is furthering our understanding of how bioactives found in nature are powerful catalysts to improve human healthspan.”

Dietary fiber is an essential part of any healthy diet because of its ability to help maintain normal gut health. But today, only 5% of Americans consume the recommended daily intake. Brightseed Bio 01™ infuses food and beverage products with a unique combination of both dietary fiber and bioactives to support gut strength.

The gut health benefits that distinguish Brightseed Bio 01™ were identified by Brightseed’s A.I. platform Forager®. Brightseed Bio 01™ contains two naturally occurring plant compounds, N-trans-caffeoyl tyramine (NCT) and N-trans-feruloyl tyramine (NFT), that help maintain gut barrier integrity, according to Brightseed’s recently presented preclinical research.1 Clinical research studies are underway to validate this health effect. Forager® also identified hemp hulls as the richest known source of NCT and NFT. Hemp hulls are a rich source of dietary fiber that are largely a byproduct of hemp heart production, which Brightseed has upcycled to create Brightseed Bio 01.™ In addition, Brightseed Bio1™ offers a high concentration of dietary fiber, enabling manufacturers to easily achieve a good source of fiber content in their products.

Formulated to optimize bioactive content to support overall gut health, Brightseed Bio 01™ can be easily integrated into cereals, granolas, nutrition bars and functional beverages, among other popular items. Brightseed will demonstrate their fiber’s unique attributes in several product prototypes at SSW, including the newly formulated Puris BioCrisp+ made with Brightseed Bio 01™. The crisp is designed for inclusion in cereals, bars and baked goods, where it will deliver delicious, nutrition-packed crunch with an excellent source of protein and good source of fiber.

“Sustainability and innovation are the core of what we do at PURIS. Partnering with Brightseed on a crisp that revitalizes a fiber stream to create a complete plant protein encompasses what we see as the future of the plant-based space,” said Tyler Lorenzen, CEO, PURIS Proteins.

Anna Gustafson, RDN and Business Development Executive at PURIS added, “Bioactives have been missing from American diets, and attention to their functions is the future of better-for-you products. PURIS is excited to partner with Brightseed on a novel protein crisp that targets the fiber deficit and rising consumer demand for gut health solutions.”

“Puris is an ideal partner that is at the forefront of plant-based, sustainability-focused health innovation that solves challenges food companies face, and we’re thrilled to debut Brightseed Bio 01™ with them in a revolutionary protein crisp for immediate consumer product integration,” said Alina Slotnik, VP of Bioactives, Brightseed. “Brightseed Bio 01™ not only demonstrates how Forager® is rapidly translating insights into tangible products for the marketplace but offers a true evolution in the field of nutrition science to benefit consumer health.”

    About Bioactives

Bioactives are small molecule compounds produced by plants, fungi, and microbes that grow in and adapt to environments that present a wide range of challenges to their survival. Bioactives also benefit the health of humans – they are the enlivening caffeine in tea, the powerful antioxidant lycopene in tomatoes or curcumin in turmeric, and they inform active ingredients in medicines like Taxol, aspirin and Metformin, the latter a first-line treatment for Type 2 diabetes derived from the French lilac flower. Science has long known that bioactives are critical to human health, yet the vast majority remain unknown and uncharted – often referred to as the “dark matter” of nutrition. Brightseed’s A.I., Forager®, discovers bioactives in nature and maps them to human health outcomes at a rate and accuracy that was previously impossible.

    About Brightseed

Brightseed is a pioneer in biosciences and artificial intelligence (A.I.) that illuminates nature to restore human health. Brightseed’s proprietary A.I., Forager®, accelerates bioactive discovery, biological validation and ingredient formulation from years to months, rapidly revealing new connections between nature and humanity. Through Forager® and clinical evaluation, Brightseed partners with organizations across the consumer health continuum to offer insight into the world of bioactives and health solutions. • Employees at New Jersey’s Harmony Foundation and Harmony Dispensary Join Wave Voting in Favor of Unionizing With UFCW

As company announces exciting plans to expand medical marijuana business and enter adult use market, workers will enjoy important union protections, trainings and benefits.

WEST BERLIN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 360 is pleased to announce the decision by workers at Harmony Foundation, and its Harmony Dispensary in Secaucus, NJ., to unionize as members of UFCW. Harmony employees can now add their names to the quickly growing ranks of UFCW Local 360 from across New Jersey’s young marijuana economy. Recently, Harmony announced its intention to expand into the adult use marijuana market, and to open locations in Hoboken, Jersey City – as well as a new cultivation site in Lafayette.

“It’s great news for these workers, and their families. They carefully considered, and then selected, the career-supporting benefits that come with joining Local 360,” said Hugh Giordano, UFCW Local 360’s director of organizing. “From making sure that sick and suffering patients get the help they need, to educating them on how to properly experience the benefits of medical marijuana and supporting the expansion of this industry, they’ve shown their commitment to the promise of the cannabis economy.”

“Across the cannabis industry, a new generation of workers is discovering that bona fide labor unions play a critical role in properly balancing the needs of employees, communities and employers,” said Sam Ferraino, Jr., UFCW Local 360 president. “This vote is not just a show of support in the promise of unions to positively impact businesses, families and communities, it’s also a declaration in support of high operating standards and a diverse and skilled workforce with good working conditions.”

“We’ve always said that UFCW supports cannabis industry workers from seed to sale,” added Giordano. “And with a company like Harmony, that’s clearly the case. They’re already a name in medical marijuana, with their own cultivation and dispensary operations, and they’re actively looking to expand, both geographically through new stores and by entering the adult use market. It’s the right time to join with Local 360, and we’re proud that these workers came to the same conclusion.”

From seed to sale, UFCW is a recognized leader in organizing cannabis industry employees and is the official AFL-CIO designated cannabis labor union. Representing tens of thousands of cannabis workers in dispensaries, labs, delivery, manufacturing, processing, grow facilities and more, UFCW works with employees and business owners to achieve the shared goal of a regulated cannabis industry that delivers family-sustaining jobs and is focused on social equity.

About United Food and Commercial Workers: The UFCW International Union represents over 1.3 million hardworking families across the U.S. and Canada. These members work in essential industries such as Retail, Warehousing, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Transportation, the Public Sector and Cannabis.

  • Rapid Growth in United Food and Commercial Workers’ Local 360 Membership Continues With Workers at Curaleaf Dispensary

Employees at the company’s Edgewater, New Jersey dispensary, which serves both medical marijuana and adult use customers, are among the latest to join UFCW.

WEST BERLIN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, Local 360, announces that employees at Curaleaf’s Edgewater, NJ., dispensary have voted to organize as members of UFCW. The Curaleaf location in Edgewater originally served only medical marijuana patients, but now also serves the adult use market. Nationally, Curaleaf operates 134 local dispensaries and 26 cultivation sites across 22 states.

“Votes like this will keep New Jersey’s cannabis economy thriving for years to come. A whole new generation of workers is discovering that labor unions play a critical role in balancing the needs of employees, communities and employers, and they want in,” said Hugh Giordano, UFCW Local 360 director of organizing. “And when we take the recent decision to pardon people convicted of ‘simple possession’ into account, it’s clear that the mission of protecting cannabis workers in their workplaces, and establishing a fair and equitable industry that supports family-sustaining jobs, is making serious progress.”

Curaleaf describes itself as a company of leaders, community members and responsible employers. With the decision by its Edgewater location to join with UFCW Local 360, those claims are made even stronger and more tangible, according to Giordano.

“Wherever cannabis is legalized, UFCW is committed to building a successful, responsible industry,” said Sam Ferraino, Jr., UFCW Local 360’s president. “Every vote to unionize is workers saying they want to be part of something special and they are in it for the long-haul. The most successful employers will be those that hear this message and embrace its implications.”

From seed to sale, UFCW is a recognized leader in organizing cannabis industry employees and is the official AFL-CIO designated cannabis labor union. UFCW represents tens of thousands of cannabis workers across the US in dispensaries, labs, delivery, kitchens, manufacturing, processing, grow facilities and more. • AiAdvertising’s Campaign Performance Platform Helps Lift Q3 Sales for BioHarvest Sciences’ Resveratrol Superfood Supplement VINIA

Disruptive Cloud-Hosted Subscription-Based Ad Management Solution Delivers 48% Higher Return on Google Ad Spend (ROAS)

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AiAdvertising, Inc. (OTC: AIAD), a next-generation AdTech company focused on harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to build software for today’s marketing leaders, announced it has achieved early success with BioHarvest Sciences’ (CSE: BHSC) (OTCQB: CNVCF) (FSE: 8MV) first commercialized blood flow superfood supplement VINIA.

BioHarvest, a plant cell growth company, became the first and only company that grows cells of plants at industrial scale in liquid bioreactors in order to produce the secondary metabolites. In April 2022, they partnered with AiAdvertising for its resveratrol superfood supplement VINIA® for its Google related search advertising. Initial results were very positive and by mid-August 2022, VINIA had seen over 180% increase in revenue from their Google spend and a 48% higher Return on Ad Spend (ROAS). AI Advertising played a critical role in scaling BioHarvest’s Google platform advertising. As a result of AI systems, the increase in ROAS by 48% allowed BioHarvest to double their media spend on Google.

Based on this superior performance, AiAdvertising has now been engaged to enhance BioHarvest’s major U.S. marketing scale-up, which has added National Television. As of September 30, 2022, AiAds has seen further improved results, and BioHarvest’s overall Return on Ad Spend since April 2022 increased by 90%. AiAds’ management of Google advertising is a foundational component in BioHarvest’s overall marketing mix which includes TV, Radio, and other online channels.

“We are impressed with the results of our collaboration with AiAdvertising, one of our key strategic ecommerce partners,” stated Ilan Sobel, CEO of BioHarvest Sciences. “Artificial Intelligence is now permeating every business sector imaginable and the commercial applications we are beginning to see in digital Advertising simply cannot be ignored. Our partnership with AiAdvertising, while still in its infancy, played a critical role as a key member of our ecosystem of marketing partners in scaling our VINIA business and delivering a step-change in our revenue performance and in the improvement of key metrics such as ROAS. We look forward to building on the great momentum and leveraging more of the AI Platform, not only for VINIA®, but also for our future pipeline of products.”

VINIA employs AiAdvertising’s Campaign Performance Platform (CPP), which is the industry’s first cloud-hosted subscription-based Ad Management solution that enables brands and agencies to easily plan, create, predict, execute, scale, and measure digital advertising campaigns.

“These initial outcomes with VINIA have led to a month-over-month increase in BioHarvest’s budget and has helped drive triple digit revenue growth for VINIA sales in the third quarter,” said Jerry Hug, CEO of AiAdvertising. “We are seeing similar results across our client base, and it is now clear the momentum with our disruptive Campaign Performance Platform is gaining traction as we are leveraging AI in our platform to drive performance. We look forward to executing on the next phase of our campaign with BioHarvest as they bring their lead product VINIA to consumers in need of a superior heart healthy blood flow supplement.”

  • Leafly’s 2nd Annual International Budtender Day Highlights the Importance of Cannabis’ Frontline Workforce with Exclusive Networking and Training Event in New Jersey

The event brings more than 100 current and aspiring East Coast-based budtenders together for networking opportunities and a deep-dive into the science and history of cannabis

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today, Leafly Holdings, Inc. (“Leafly”), a leading cannabis discovery marketplace and resource, celebrates the 2nd Annual International Budtender Day with an exclusive networking and training event in Hoboken, NJ for current and aspiring budtenders – frontline cannabis retail workers – from new and up-and-coming East Coast. The event is in partnership with Business of Cannabis, a company that specializes in highlighting the companies, brands, people and trends driving the cannabis industry in North America.

The only holiday that recognizes the often unrecognized workers in cannabis, Leafly’s International Budtenders Day celebrates the budtenders’ role in empowering customers with the knowledge they need to discover the benefits of cannabis, bringing awareness to an often overlooked profession that plays a crucial role in the success of the cannabis industry.

During the event, Leafly will announce the two winners of a nationwide contest the company ran this month to recognize those who epitomize the ideal budtender:

    • Mandi Drake, Verilife in Liverpool, NY
    • Jacquelyn McTighe, Youngtown Curaleaf in Youngtown, Arizona

Budtenders are the face of the cannabis industry. They are expected to understand cannabis and have the customer service skills necessary to explain the complexities of cannabis to a curious public. The position requires a passion for cannabis, exceptional knowledge of cannabis products and their effects, and strong customer service skills. As New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Jersey continue to open their adult-use cannabis stores, demand for budtenders is rising across the East Coast.

“The cannabis industry will never be as small as it is now and the demand for experienced budtenders will continue to grow. It is so rare to have an opportunity to shape an industry from its inception and this is an exciting time for new budtenders,” said Dr. Nick Jikomes, Leafly’s Director of Science and Innovation. “Leafly is the informed way to shop for weed and we believe knowledge is power. There is no better way to celebrate this holiday than by sharing information about this magical plant with up and coming budtenders seeking to join this emerging field.”

Leafly offers budtenders cannabis online educational opportunities at no cost with thousands of educational articles covering every topic relevant to the industry. Two formal Leafly Learn courses are also available to budtenders employed by Leafly-subscribed retailers. Since launching the Leafly Learn platform in 2019, more than 13,000 budtenders from North America have enrolled in the program.

The event in Hoboken – offered at no cost on a first come, first serve basis – features two training sessions led by Leafly experts:

    • What Are Cannabis Strains? A chemistry-first approach on how different strains provide different effects.
    • Three Ways to Shop for Weed: a deep-dive into cannabinoids, terpenes, and through a hands-on “terp bar”

Members of the press in the New York City area are invited to attend the event upon request.

  • MediCane Health Inc. Announce First Patient Enrolled in a Phase IIa Clinical Trial of MediCane’s Balanced T3:C3 Oral Medical Cannabis Oil for Symptom Relief of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD)

KFAR SAVA, Israel–(BUSINESS WIRE)–MediCane Health Inc. (along with its subsidiaries together referred to as “MediCane”) today announced the recruitment of the first patient for its clinical study designed to achieve relief of agitation and disruptive behaviors in subjects with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) who do not respond or only partially respond to treatment with antipsychotic medications.

The trial is being conducted in two leading academic hospitals in Israel, Sheba Medical Center and Sourasky Medical Center. A total of 55 subjects will receive MediCane’s balanced T3:C3 oral medical cannabis oil extracted from MediCane’s proprietary strain and formulated for blinding purposes, on top of standard of care. Part one of the study is an open-label phase that will enroll 15 subjects for safety and dose-range finding; Part two is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase that will enroll 40 subjects to evaluate safety and efficacy.

The study is co-funded by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, a leading multinational pharmaceutical company, which holds exclusive sales and marketing rights for the product in Europe (except CIS countries).

“MediCane is proud to collaborate with two of the leading medical centers in Israel in our journey to find a safe and effective cannabis-based medicine for BPSD symptom relief,” said Dr. Nurit Tweezer-Zaks, Chief Executive Officer of MediCane R&D. “Through this joint effort and with the active collaboration of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories we hope to be able to successfully complete the study during 2024 and launch the product in Israel, Germany and additional EU markets.”

“The mission of MediCane Health Inc. is to develop evidence-based treatments created from cannabis plants in its derived molecules. We see symptom reduction as a clinically meaningful goal of the cannabis plant for BPSD,” said Dr. Neta Rimmerman, VP MediCane R&D. “Based on our proprietary strain cultivated in Israel, we developed an oil-based formulation that showed promising results in pre-clinical research.”

Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that accounts for most dementia cases worldwide. Dementia is a syndrome in which there is deterioration in memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform everyday activities. Among the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), agitation and disruptive behaviors, expressed as excessive fidgeting, restlessness, pacing, shouting, screaming, uninhibited behaviors, and aggression, are present in over half of patients with dementia at some point during the illness. This syndrome has significant negative consequences on the patient’s life and the lives of those around him, and it causes severe dependence on others and considerable fatigue on the main caregiver.

“The toolbox available to the treating physicians today to deal with BPSD symptoms is very limited,” according to Co-Principal Investigator Professor Ramit Ravona-Springer, Director of the Psychogeriatric and Memory Clinic at the Sheba Medical Center. “Our goal is to add cannabis-based treatments to the existing treatment arsenal to achieve symptom relief in a non-sedative manner which will provide caregivers with the opportunity to continue effective home care to their loved ones. My team and I are excited to lead this innovative clinical trial for the benefit of patients in Israel and around the world.”

“Me and my team are delighted to join the critical mission of helping dementia patients and their families,” said Co-Principal Investigator Dr. Noa Bergman, Director of the Memory and Attention Disorders Center, Neurology Department at the Sourasky Medical Center. “The balancing act of the available treatment options is very challenging as the risks might often outweigh the benefits. We witness the suffering of the patients and caregivers daily and are committed to collaborate with MediCane Health to find alternative cannabis-based solutions relying on robust clinical evidence.”

    About MediCane’s balanced T3:C3 oil

MediCane’s balanced T3:C3 oil is an oral medical cannabis oil extracted from MediCane’s proprietary strain in GMP-grade olive oil, which is based on a marketed balanced T3:C3 (THC:CBD) MediCane product. During the clinical trial, MediCane’s balanced T3:C3 is administered sublingually using a dropper, three times a day, following a designated titration protocol.

  • Curaleaf International to Present Positive Clinical and Pre-Clincial Research

Clinical study demonstrates significant improvement in pain

LONDON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Curaleaf International (the “Company”) part of Curaleaf Holdings (CNSX:CURA), Europe’s largest vertically integrated cannabis company, is pleased to announce that Chief Scientific Officer, Dr Barbara Pacchetti will present research on one clinical study and three preclinical studies at a leading conference on medical cannabis on 21-22 October 2022. These papers have been peer-reviewed and selected for presentation and publication in the official Conference Proceedings Journal Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoids (Karger Publishers, Basel, Switzerland).

Research to be presented from the clinical study focuses on the delivery of a cannabidiol (CBD) preparation to patients with Vestibulodynia (VBD) which is a prevalent form of chronic genital pain in women with no standard treatment. The study, a randomized placebo control study, of 60 patients showed significant improvement of outcomes on pain, dyspareunia (genital pain before, during or after sex), pelvic muscular tone and neurometer parameters, which highlights implications for its anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive action and anti-neuropathic therapeutic potential. The title of the paper is: Transmucosal delivery of cannabidiol using vestibular electroporation in patients with vestibulodynia: interim analysis of a randomized, blinded prospective trial. The co-authors are F. Murina, Prof. MD., F. Vicariotto, Prof. MD and Barbara Pacchetti, Chief Scientific Officer at Curaleaf International.

Preclinical research to be presented focuses on the potential positive impact of CBD on the treatment of several psychiatric disorders and inflammatory disease, the therapeutic potential for migraine pain and trigeminal excitability related to migraine. For further information on the preclinical research to be presented, please see the footnote at the end of this announcement.*

Dr. Barbara Pacchetti, Chief Scientific Officer at Curaleaf International, commented, “We are very pleased with the findings from our clinical study on the delivery of CBD to treat patients with VBD, and that it is showing a significant improvement in pain outcomes for patients. Additionally, the preclinical research on the therapeutic potential of CBD to treat a number of other indications is also encouraging and I look forward to presenting this to the scientific community and to furthering our research into the potential for CBD. We believe the growth and understanding of medical cannabis must be underpinned by the most robust science. Curaleaf International is working with some of the world’s leading academic institutions such as Imperial College, the University of Milan and University of Insubria and we look forward to further updating all stakeholders with our progress.”

    *Details on the preclinical studies

Cannabidiol (CBD) is considered a valuable potential treatment for several psychiatric disorders. This preclinical study demonstrates, for the first time, that CBD is detected in the plasma and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), following single or repeated treatment at therapeutical doses, with a specific dose-response profile. CBD significantly modulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, a neurotrophin critical for synaptic plasticity, following a brain specific anatomical pattern. This modulatory effect on BDNF might be functionally relevant and represent added value for the potential therapeutic role of CBD in psychiatric disorders.

(Title and Authors: Cannabidiol exposure modulated the BDNF system in the rat cortico-striatal circuitry – F. Mottarlini, M. Fumagalli, F. Castillo-Diaz, S. Piazza, G. Targa, E. Sangiovanni, B. Pacchetti, M.H. Sodergren, M. Dell’Agli, F. Fumagalli and L. Caffino)

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) are the first immune cell to be recruited into inflammatory sites, and cannabidiol (CBD) extensively affects their functions. This study confirmed the anti-inflammatory activity of CBD on some PMN functions observed in a previous study. Results indicate that CBD counteracts the effects of priming on key functions such as migration and ROS production, strengthening its therapeutic potential in inflammatory disease.

(Title and Authors: Effects of cannabidiol on migration and reactive oxygen species production in bacterial lipopolysaccharide primed human polymorphonuclear leukocyte – F. Marino, E. Rasini, A. Luini, M. Legnaro, A. Gemma, B. Pacchetti, M. H. Sodergren, M. Cosentino)

Clinical and preclinical data have suggested a deregulation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in migraine pain and trigeminal excitability related to migraine. This in-vivo study evaluated and found key information on the accumulation of Cannabidiol (CBD) in brain areas that are involved in migraine pain in an animal model at therapeutical doses chronically, and evidenced that a single CBD administration may reduce trigeminal hyperalgesia in an animal model for migraine pain. The results suggested the capability of CBD to modulate migraine-related nociceptive transmission via specific central and peripheral regions.

(Title and Authors: Cannabidiol as a potential treatment for migraine: preliminary data in an animal model. R Greco, C Demartini, M Francavilla, M Palmisani, A M Zanaboni, R Marchiselli, S Facchetti, V Franco, B Pacchetti, C Tassorelli)
